June 27, 1999 -- The Friends of Freedom Society is the proud winner of one of the White House Millennium Council's National Millennium Trails. The new National Underground Railroad Millennium trail was one of sixteen new flagship trails honored by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and Secretary Rodney Slater, U. S. Department of Transportation.

This announcement was made yesterday, June 26, 1999, at the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy's Second International Conference held at the Westin William Penn Hotel, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Cathy Nelson, Friends of Freedom Society president and Mr. John Mattox, Ohio Underground Railroad Association coordinator and curator of the National Underground Railroad Museum at Flushing, Ohio were there to accept the award.

Letter from the Governor

Ohio Governor Bob Taft has been extremely supportive of the Friends of Freedom Society's submission for a Millennium Trail.  On July 6, 1999 we received the following letter from the governor:

Dear Ms. Nelson:

Congratulations to the Friends of Freedom Society for the selection of your Underground Railroad project as one of sixteen new "flagship" National Millennium Trails!

The Society has achieved this honor through hard work and determination and you are all to be commended.  It is always a pleasure to see Ohioians set goals and reach them.

    Best wishes for continued success.

Sincerely,

Bob Taft,
Governor
