Friends of Freedom Society, Inc. Unveils New Underground Railroad Marker Flags in Honor of Black History Month

The Friends of Freedom Society, Inc. (FOFS) /Ohio Underground Railroad Association will distribute Underground Railroad Marker Flags to 100 sites around the state of Ohio to celebrate and honor the countless runaway slaves seeking freedom in Ohio through the secretive network of the Underground Railroad.

On Saturday, February 5, 2000, the first of these marker flags will be presented to two private homeowners in Chillicothe and members of the Samuel Moore Historic House in Circleville.

These bright red, 11 X16 flags bear the official FOFS logo with the lettering, "Historic Underground Railroad Site." They are designed to hang in a window or on a garden stake.

Funding for these marker flags was made possible through a grant from the Ohio Arts Council.

The Friends of Freedom Society, Inc. has been designated as the White House Millennium Council's National Underground Railroad Millennium Trail, one of sixteen 'Flagship' Millennium Trails sponsored by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.
