Education

The Friends of Freedom Society and the Ohio Underground Railroad Association are dedicated to bringing history alive.  We are working with the City of Columbus and Ohio State Historic Preservation Office to develop a statewide K-12 curriculum to teach about the Underground Railroad movement.

We applaud the following uses of Underground Railroad History in the classroom:

bulletResearch History in Washington Court House High School
bulletUnderground Railroad in 3rd and 4th grade in Springboro
bulletUnderground Railroad Story Quilt

Please check out our Links and Resources page for resources that you might find useful.   Our Research page contains advice on how to find Underground Railroad sites in your area and also how to research a specific site.

U.S. Department of Education Awards History Grant to Friends of Freedom Society Partners

October 2003: The Cumberland County School System in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in partnership with the Friends of Freedom Society, Inc. has been awarded a $915,057 American History Grant from the U.S. Department of Education to provide professional development programs for fifteen Cumberland County teachers.

One of the main components of this grant is Underground Railroad history. The Friends of Freedom Society will be assisting in that effort. The participating teachers will be guests at the Eighth Annual Ohio Underground Railroad Summit, and participate in training over the next three years.
